big fish [15 Mar 2010|09:17pm]

bonjovial
I finished Big Fish the other day. The more I think about it, the more impressed I am with how the strings pull together. The ending is so strange and so natural! I wasn't blown away or anything, but I don't think I've read anything with so much coherence for a while.

Because it is essentially a collection of unrelated anecdotes around a theme, I wonder how the movie was put together. How does it make sense as a whole? I want to see it, but I have a feeling that converting those words into real life will make them seem clunky and fake.

Yesterday(Sun) was White Day. Today, one co-worker (boss#6) got candy for all the women and another (boss#7) got me a box of chocolates in "return" for the cupcakes I made. It was nice♥

There are a thousand things I should be doing to prepare for my trip, but lately I find myself too lazy/tired/cold/hungry/blah blah blah. Instead I set it aside in my mind and hope for the best. I know this strategy is going to fail me splendidly someday soon, but until then.......!

bollywood

[rhapsodyinpink]
Hi everyone! So at my university, there are several South Asian dance teams. One of them, Anubhav, is a "Filmi" team, which means that their dances are in the Bollywood style and has a cute story and lots of color and excitement. They've been doing extremely well this year, and now they're trying to get a slot in a national competition- but their attendance depends completely upon votes! So I was hoping that everyone here could help out and send a text (it's free to vote) and help them out.

Here's the official announcement:

Send Northwestern's Hindi Film Dance Team
ANUBHAV to BOLLYWOOD AMERICA

We need your votes!
TEXT BA4 to 47201
DON'T WORRY. IT'S FREE!
AND IT TAKES 2 MINUTES!

ONLY ONE TEXT IS ALLOWED PER PHONE.
TEXTING CLOSES AT 11PM CST ON SATURDAY, MARCH 13TH.
VOTE NOW--AND PLEASE TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS!
THANK YOU!

Anubhav is currently in second place, and they don't get to go unless they win first, so I would really appreciate it if you could take a moment to vote! I've already told all my RL friends, but I'm also currently trying to harness the power of the Interwebz to help us win. :D ♥

I could actually speak a lot of basic Mongolian if I were to meet a famous sumo wrestler! I love our Mongolian CIR♥♥♥

My friend-neighbor-co-workers (the Mongolian CIR and a Taiwanese CIR) and I decided spontaneously this morning to have lunch at this bakery that also does course meals. (With all-you-can-eat bread! I am in love with their sweet and super super yummy pumpkin rolls.)

There were seven courses, and the main: roast chicken with demi glace sauce. With lots of yummy oven-fresh bread in between.

But even after eating so much, hunger still strikes ://

Lately, I've been living on braised tofu and whatever vegetables are cheap at the moment:

Today was my last real day off until April 2nd. Hopefully I'll get lucky and have some breathing room before that, but I won't know until we get there D:

Rock icon, Andy Fraser, bass player and founding member of the seminal rock band FREE, and writer of their mega-hit "All Right Now," is pleased to learn that one of his bass guitars will go on exhibit this week at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, in Cleveland, Ohio.
"The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has become a premier institution in the music industry, long appreciated for its sense of giving and recognition," states Fraser. "It is humbling that they honor me by the introduction of this classic instrument into their museum - and I thank them."

According to Fraser, the bass which he recently donated is a "one of a kind," specifically made for him by Z-Guitars, an innovative UK custom guitar builder. "This bass enabled me to integrate my early style from the days of FREE to the way I play today."
Fraser recorded with the bass on his latest release, "This Is The Big One," a powerful song and video about global warming and resulting catastrophic climate change. It is the first single from his forthcoming album, Andy Fraser…On Assignment."

[gemfinder]
hi,

I know this is off topic (just pretend it's bollywood). It's two movies about a guy in London pacing and yelling in front of the women's building's only 24hr exit for 20 minutes, at 2am.

Does anyone know what language he's speaking and what he's saying? I suspect it's urdu or hindustani; it's behind the cut, sorry in advance if it's something offensive or violent.

moving day [11 Mar 2010|11:16pm]

[ music | 岩瀬敬吾 - インスタント ]

At work today there were big changes in the seating arrangement for the new CIR we're getting, so we spent 2 hours in the afternoon rearranging everything. It was a big deal.

I had my camera today! These guys are my favorite:

Tottori's mascot, the bird-pear Toripi! These magnets are all the same, but they look like they have different expressions!

My last ikebana class of this session. I signed up to continue next session, because even if I suck, it's really nice to have a room full of flowers.

My flower tapestry. It's such a great idea, but I just didn't have time to flesh it out:

My twitter friends probably think I'm demented because of how much I rant and rave about strawberries. At one point this week, I had six packages in my refrigerator! But, really, the Japanese win at strawberry cultivation. Here is Tottori benihoppe strawberries vs. Fukuoka akihime:

(The Tottori strawberries are sweeter, even if they are small).

I finished reading the book Chains a few days ago. I like historical fiction, and I had read from this author when I was younger. It's an interesting read, but I fail to see what distinguishes this from the millions of other novels about essentially the same thing. I also did not know that this is only the first part of a series, and that was not a fun thing to find out at the end of the book when there is no tidy conclusion.

I love that YA books get to the point instead of trying to show off their ~flowery language and abstract thoughts~ but sometimes they lack grace.

speaking of health insurance [09 Mar 2010|10:02pm]

bonjovial
I went to the dentist in Japan for the first time today! My mom has made me go twice a year for as long as I remember, and I had been meaning to go... but... erm...

It wasn't that different, but they were kind of surprised that I was there even though nothing hurt.

The stuff that they use to polish your teeth tasted nice, though. I'm not sure what the flavor was, but it was subtle and sweet-ish but not gross and revolting like whatever they use in the US. My dentist had a dozen flavors, maybe, and when I was little I would keep trying different ones in hopes that I would finally find one that did not make me want to hack it up. My efforts were in vain! I wonder what they use here.

Oh, also! No free stuff :(

The national health insurance system in Japan is so good. I wish the rest of America would realize how shitty our system is compared with, well, the world.

OH, also, it's 3月9日 today! I played that song on repeat all day in honor♪ Although, it's a song about spring and it snowed a shit ton this afternoon. Oh well.

Yesterday after work I made lasagna and garlic bread and invited a friend over for dinner.

It turned out pretty well, even though I had a really hard time finding lasagna noodles and ricotta cheese is non-existent here (cottage cheese is inferior but works well enough).

Yummy~~♪

I took the day off today and ended up eating with friends again tonight. It was super fun to think about menus! I made meatloaf for the first time in my life, and it turned out really well. It was super moist and perfect!

With garlic mashed potatoes and risotto.

One of my friends made chicken soup, and another made potato chijimi(!!!) and basically I have been eating too much.

I also bought some clothes today. I actually fit in a blazer made for small people (5'2")....!! Maybe that store had all of their sizes labeled wrong, but still this was good news. I am slowly expanding my collection of skirts and work clothes~

food escapism [06 Mar 2010|11:57pm]

It was Hina Matsuri this week, and I had been meaning to get a mini boy and girl doll to put out but I realized that this is precisely how I end up drowning in stuff and end up with off-the-charts stress levels when I need to move. This has otherwise not really stopped me from accumulating tons of shit.

But, I has peach blossoms! They're really cute:

My ikebana attempts are starting to look more ikebana-like:

I only have one more session! I think, though, that I might try out calligraphy next? Hopefully there is more guidance.

Anyway, food pictures of the week:

Risotto with looooooooooots of veggies

the amount of time I spend cooking, eating, and shopping for food must be terrifying )

Aside from the time I spent showering and testing out my computer today, I think the entire rest of the day was spent in activities related to the pursuit of food. They say humans are advanced creatures and whatnot. I don't know about you, but I certainly don't stray far from the basic HOMG MUST PROCURE FOOD instinct.

violent dreams [06 Mar 2010|01:04am]

[ music | Jump, Little Children - Violent Dreams ]

I have been learning the hard way lately that the streets are not all parallel here. I spent about an hour lost in the Western part of the city today. It started out as a nice walk, and as it got darker and I had no idea where I was... a little worrying. It's all good, though, because my cell phone has GPS! I never really feel unsafe, either.

The problem with this city is that the good stuff is not all clumped together in a recognizable way. I found 3 really nice bakeries all tucked away in this labyrinthine area of houses!

I've been having unsettling dreams lately. It's unusual that I remember any, much less two in one week. I think this means I need to lay off reading horror movie summaries on Wikipedia.

stabby people and ghost-monsters oh no )

Anyway, it's been weird waking up lately. When I was younger I used to have nightmares when I would actually wake up crying (although not that often), but in these cases I've always felt more like I was watching a movie that ended when I woke up.

Still, I'm very curious about dreams. Is it really just a side effect of random brain activity and memory storage, or do they play some kind of evolutionary role?

unsolicited advice [04 Mar 2010|11:23pm]

bonjovial
So today one of the Korean CIRs (♂) essentially told me in passing that I am relatively unattractive. He was making small talk with the people in my area, and I had just told him that a picture he showed me was funny because everyone was making a weird expression. There was no lead up that I could see, anyway.

More specifically, he told me that since the two women who sit next to me have small faces and are very pretty, I should "watch out" because unless I do something, sitting between them will make my "huge face" stand out even more. Casually. And then he walked away.

I couldn't believe that he had just said that, and I couldn't even react. But I felt like I was back in middle school, and every other word from someone's mouth made me feel like I was better off dead.

I know he didn't mean anything by it, but it's a fragile time, and I still feel unsettled. Political correctness does not exist in the slightest here, and in the media it is made perfectly clear that undesirable women aren't worthy of respect. And yes, they have "big faces."

I won't let myself lose (too much) sleep over this, but I don't know how to deal with my thoughts. I'm so mad at him for unlocking my box of insecurities and HOMG I'M GOING TO DIE ALONE-ness asdlkalkdjlsad (as if I weren't doing JUST FINE at freaking myself out on my own).

WELL AT LEAST I'LL HAVE A HOUSE FULL OF CATS >[
